How to Migrate your Credentials in Analytics Canvas

Google OAuth has made changes to how applications connect to user data.  Part of this change requires an update to connectors that are used in Analytics Canvas, including Google Sheets, Google Analytics, Google Search Console and Google Ads.

You will need to update the credentials that authorized these connectors, and if you are using Google Sheets, you will have to select the specific files that you permit Analytics Canvas to access.

Follow the steps below to ensure a successful migration.

If you are an Online only user, skip to this section below.

This article relates to Analytics Canvas On-Premise tools (Desktop, Server, and Desktop-Cloud Automation) and to Analytics Canvas Online.

How to Migrate your Credentials in Analytics Canvas Desktop

Update Analytics Canvas Desktop + Server

The first step is to update the version of Analytics Canvas you are using to at least Version 6.0 or higher.

Steps to update Analytics Canvas Desktop + Server

  1. Uninstall the application from your Windows Control Panel.
  2. Download and install the latest version of Analytics Canvas.

All of your existing authorizations will remain in-tact and your workflows are forwardly compatible.

Update Credentials Used in the Application

Once you have upgraded to V6.0 or above, open the application from the Windows Start menu and you will be presented with a list of credentials that require updating.

Simply click on each one to re-authorize the connection to Analytics Canvas.  Be sure to carefully review each step of the Oauth process and check any boxes that are displayed.  While they appear optional, they are required for the service to work.

If you do not select all checkboxes, you will be asked to repeat the process again.

Repeat this process for each credential.  While you can ignore the step, any process that involves the use of a credential that has not been updated will fail.

Once you have completed the reauthorization of each credential in the list, if you have any Google Sheets in your workflows, proceed to the next step.

Otherwise, skip ahead to the section on updating your automated workflows

Update Google Sheets Access (For Sheets Users Only)

Open each individual file that uses Google Sheets and is used in an automated workflow.

When you open the file, you will be asked to select the specific file for use with Analytics Canvas.

Your browser will open and you will be taken to Google's site where you must use Google's file picker to select the file you wish to use with Canvas.

The easiest way to identify the file is to click the search box.  The name should be pre-populated, and you should be shown the file.  Click on it to select it.

You will be returned to Analytics Canvas. If not, you can close your browser window and return to Canvas.  If there are other files used in the Canvas, you will be asked to select them before continuing.

For any of your files that are used in Automation packages, either Server or Cloud, you must use this new process to select the file.  Once you have made the selections, you must update your automation workflows as directed below.

For any of your files that are used in Automation packages, either Server or Cloud, you must use this new process to select the file. Once you have made the selections, you must update your automation workflows as directed below.

Updating your Automated Workflows (Server + Desktop/Cloud Automation)

You must now update the credentials used in any automation task, using either Analytics Canvas Server Automation or Analytics Canvas Desktop Cloud Automation.

Analytics Canvas Server Automation

For users of Analytics Canvas Server Automation, update each file and workflow individually.

  1. Open a Canvas file used in an automated workflow.
  2. Go to the Automation menu, and select "Generate Password File for this Canvas"
  3. Overwrite the previous passwords file in the local environment and on the server that is running the automation task (if applicable).

Migrating Credentials in Analytics Canvas Online

In Analytics Canvas Online, when you login, you will be shown a list of credentials that require updating.  If you are using Sheets, there are additional steps required to select your Sheets.

Start by clicking on each credential.  You will be taken to Google's new OAuth window and asked for specific access to Analytics Canvas.

Be sure to check all checkboxes before proceeding, otherwise, the migration will not work and Analytics Canvas will not have the access it needs to process your data.

Once you have refreshed all tokens, if you do not have any Google Sheets authorizations, you are all set.  Canvas will automatically use the new credentials in all queries and automation tasks.

If you are using Google Sheets, proceed to the next step:

Update Google Sheets Access (For Sheets Users Only)

If you have Sheets that require selection, you will see the button "Authorize Spreadsheets" next to the credential name.  Click that button to proceed.

You will then be shown a list of sheets to update.

If you no longer have access to the Sheet, or if it has been deleted, you can click "Do not authorize".

Otherwise, click the link to the Sheet to begin the migration, selecting the appropriate Sheet when prompted.

It takes just a few seconds to find and select your Sheet.

Once you have completed the exercise, you will be shown a confirmation screen.  Click OK to continue working with Analytics Canvas.
